Background material

"Dr Samuel Okware was one of the first influential African scientists to help HIV/AIDS high up the political agenda in sub Saharan Africa. He is still involved in the Ugandan AIDS movement. Uganda was also along with Thailand and Brazil the first countries, which succeded to halt the spread of HIV, thanks to the national AIDS response in those countries. Samuel Okware was the first well known African scientist, who I interviewed 1988. This interiew was made at the WHO in Geneva in 1988. Dr Okware is a pioneer of the African AIDS response and he is still involved and became a personal friend over the years. He was important in making the fight against HIV/AIDS a priority in Uganda, the first African country to really adress HIV/AIDS as I see it." - Staffan Hildebrand
